Smell gas? Who to call
Act now
- Leave the building. Don't flip switches or use the phone inside.
- From outside, call 911 or Atlanta Gas Light's emergency line.
- Don't go back in until you're told it's safe.
- A technician should inspect the range, oven or dryer connector before you use it again.
Humidity and laundry
| Problem | Why it's worse here | Fix yourself | Technician |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front-load washer smells | Door boot and dispenser stay damp | Prop door, wipe gasket, monthly cleaning cycle | Drain pump filter clogged; gasket torn |
| Dryer takes two cycles | Heavy, damp loads; long vent runs | Clean lint screen and transition duct | Thermal fuse, element or gas valve coils |
| Refrigerator sweating on the outside | Humid kitchen air | Check door gasket seal with a dollar bill | Mullion heater or damper fault |

Quotes and timing
Ask whether the diagnostic fee is credited to the repair and whether the technician carries common parts for your brand. Summer is the busiest season for refrigeration calls, so explain whether food is at risk when you request service.
Older and newer housing stock
Metro Atlanta mixes older intown homes with laundry in a basement or crawlspace-level utility room and newer suburban builds with second-floor laundry. Upstairs laundry rooms raise the stakes on a washer leak: check that there's a drain pan under the washer and that the inlet hoses are braided and less than about five years old.
In crawlspace and basement laundry, humidity rarely drops, so mildew on the washer gasket and slow-drying clothes are almost seasonal. A dehumidifier in the room often helps the dryer as much as a vent cleaning does. If the dryer runs a full timed cycle and clothes are still damp after the vent and lint screen are clean, the heating circuit — element, thermal fuse, igniter or gas valve coils — is the next thing to check.

Why doesn't my gas marketer handle leaks?
Georgia's deregulated system separates the gas seller from the utility that owns and maintains the pipes. Atlanta Gas Light handles leaks and safety for its system.
My dryer vent goes up through the roof. Is that a problem?
Long or vertical vent runs collect more lint and moisture. Have the full run cleaned and checked if drying times have crept up.
