Short answer
Most appliance failures that maintenance can prevent come from blocked airflow, clogged filters, and worn hoses. Clean the dryer lint screen every load, clean the dishwasher filter monthly, keep refrigerator coils and vents clear, and inspect washer hoses. Leave anything involving gas, refrigerant, or internal wiring to a technician.

Schedule
| How often | Task | Prevents |
|---|---|---|
| Every load | Clean the dryer lint screen | Slow drying, overheating, fire risk |
| Monthly | Clean the dishwasher filter | Poor cleaning, drain clogs |
| Monthly | Wipe the front-loader door gasket; leave the door ajar | Odor, mildew |
| Monthly | Wipe refrigerator door seals | Seal failure, frost |
| Every 6 months | Clean refrigerator condenser coils if your manual describes it (unplugged) | Poor cooling, long run times |
| Per filter schedule | Replace refrigerator water filter | Small cubes, low dispenser flow |
| Yearly | Inspect washer supply hoses for bulges or cracks | Burst-hose flooding |
| Yearly or when drying slows | Have the dryer duct cleaned | Fire risk, slow drying |

Seasonal reminders
- Before summer: clean refrigerator and freezer condenser areas, and check garage appliances against their rated temperature range.
- Before storm season: find the water shut-offs for the refrigerator, washer, and dishwasher; check washer hoses.
- Before winter: make sure dryer vent flaps open freely and water lines aren't exposed to freezing drafts.
- After moving an appliance: re-level it and confirm hoses and ducts aren't kinked.
Before: Dust and pet hair blanket the coil, so heat can't escape. The compressor runs longer and cooling margins shrink.
After: Clean coil with clear airflow — heat leaves easily. Clean only as your manual describes, with the unit unplugged.

Signs it's time for a repair visit rather than maintenance
- A refrigerator that won't reach 40 °F after its coils and vents are clear
- A dryer that still takes two cycles after the vent is cleaned
- A washer that leaks or won't drain with a clean filter and straight hoses
- Any burning smell, sparking, or tripped breaker
Not DIY maintenance
Leave this to a professional
- Gas connections and burners beyond cleaning caps and ports
- Refrigerant
- Anything inside a microwave cabinet
- Live electrical testing
Common questions
Does cleaning refrigerator coils really help?
Dirty condenser coils make a refrigerator work harder to release heat. Clean them if your manual describes how — some models have coils that don't need routine cleaning.
