Short answer
Most often the burner is wet, the ports are clogged after a spill, or the cap is misaligned so the spark can't reach the gas. Let it dry completely, seat the cap, and clean the ports with a soft brush. If it still won't light — or you smell gas — stop and call a professional.

Gas safety
Act now
- Strong gas smell: leave immediately and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
- Don't keep clicking an unlit burner with gas flowing.

Safe checks
- Turn the burner off and let it cool.
- Dry it thoroughly — wait several hours after a spill or cleaning.
- Seat the burner cap so it's flat and centered.
- Clean ports with a soft brush, not a toothpick.
- Check whether other burners spark: if none do, the range may not have power.

Repair or replace?
A burner that won't light is a small repair. Consider replacement only if the range has several other problems, such as a failing oven, cracked cooktop, or controls with discontinued parts.
How it's diagnosed
A technician checks whether the electrode sparks strongly and at the right spot, whether the burner ports and orifice are clear, and whether the spark module and switches work. Weak spark on all burners points to the module; on one burner, to that electrode, its wire, or switch.
Cost outlook
Electrodes and switches are inexpensive parts; a spark module is moderate. Gas valve problems cost more. None of these usually justifies replacing a range on their own.
What to request
A symptom points to likely causes; only testing confirms one. If the checks above don't solve it, request a diagnosis for stove & range repair and mention what you've already checked.
Common questions
Why does my stove keep clicking after the burner lights?
Often moisture or a misaligned cap. If it continues after drying, a switch may be failing.
