How much does appliance repair cost?

Updated · Sources listed at the end

Short answer

Appliance repair cost has no honest single national price. The quote depends mostly on which part failed, how long the appliance takes to access, parts availability for your brand and model, local labor rates, and the provider's diagnostic or trip fee. We don't publish price ranges we can't source by date, location, and what's included — instead, here's how to read a quote and compare it fairly.

What's in a repair quote

ComponentWhat it coversAsk
Diagnostic / trip feeThe visit and the diagnosisIs it credited toward the repair if I go ahead?
LaborTime to access, replace, and testFlat-rate or hourly? Does it include a return visit?

The factors that move the price most

FactorWhy it matters
Appliance typeRefrigeration with sealed-system work needs certified technicians and more time; a dryer belt does not
The failed componentA gasket, fan, or igniter is a different job from a compressor, control board, or drum bearings
Brand and modelSome premium and imported brands have pricier parts or longer lead times
AgeOlder models may have discontinued parts, which can mean substitutes, delays, or no repair
AccessBuilt-in, panel-ready, stacked, and tight installations take longer
Your marketLabor rates and travel distances differ between and within metro areas
SchedulingEvening, weekend, or urgent visits may cost more where providers offer them
Return visitsIf parts must be ordered, the job may need a second trip
Kitchen with wood cabinets, a stainless side-by-side refrigerator, and a black gas range
Built-in and panel-ready units often cost more to service because of access time, not because the parts are exotic.

Before you approve a repair

  1. Get the diagnosis and the quote in writing, with parts and labor listed.
  2. Ask whether the diagnostic fee is credited.
  3. Check your warranty status — manufacturer, store, extended, or home warranty.
  4. Search the model on the CPSC recall site; a recall may cover the fix.
  5. Compare the total with a comparable new appliance, installed and hauled away.

Where cheaper isn't better

A low quote that uses an incompatible part or skips the root cause can cost more later. Examples: replacing a dryer's thermal fuse without fixing the vent that caused it to blow, or clearing a refrigerator drain without checking the defrost system that let it freeze.

Common questions

Is a diagnostic fee normal?

Yes. Most providers charge for a visit and diagnosis. Many credit it toward the repair if you proceed — ask before booking.

Why won't you list repair prices?

Because prices vary by part, brand, market, and provider, and published national averages rarely say what they include. The provider gives you the real quote.
