Appliance repair in Houston

Houston's long, humid summers make refrigerators and freezers work harder, especially in garages, and moisture encourages odor and mildew in front-load washers. Storm season adds power outages and, in some neighborhoods, flooding — and any appliance that sat in floodwater needs inspection before use. Call with your ZIP code to see whether a participating provider covers your address.

Hurricane season and outages

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30. Major storms — including Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 — have left large parts of the Houston area without power for days. CenterPoint Energy handles electric delivery and outage restoration across much of the region, regardless of which retail electricity plan you're on.

When power returns, restart large appliances one at a time and give refrigerators and freezers several hours to recover before judging them. An appliance that won't cool, trips a breaker, or shows an error code after an outage is worth a diagnosis.

If your appliances were flooded

Act now

  • Don't switch on any appliance that was in floodwater — even if it looks dry.
  • Washers, dryers, dishwashers, and the bottom of refrigerators sit closest to the floor and are most exposed.
  • Gas appliances that were flooded need professional inspection before the gas is relit. Smell gas? Leave and call 911 or CenterPoint from outside.
  • Note which appliances were affected and to what height — insurers and technicians both ask.

Renting in Houston

If your landlord supplied the appliance, your lease usually says who arranges repairs. Report problems to your property manager in writing first. If you're arranging your own repair, include gate codes, parking instructions, and unit access in your request notes.

What affects repair timing and cost in Houston

FactorWhy it matters here
Storm season demandAfter a hurricane or widespread outage, many households need repairs at once, so scheduling can take longer than usual.
Flood exposureA flooded appliance usually needs an inspection before any repair quote; some won't be safe to repair at all.
Gas or electricWith natural gas common across the area, dryers and ranges may be gas models — different parts (igniters, valves) from electric ones.
Garage installationsRefrigerators and freezers in hot garages may need clearance or relocation, not just parts.
Diagnostic feeProviders set their own; ask whether it's credited toward the repair.

Common questions

Is my garage refrigerator OK in a Houston summer?

Only if the model is rated for the temperatures your garage reaches. Many refrigerators list an ambient range in the manual; above it they can run constantly or fail to hold temperature.

My refrigerator stopped cooling after an outage. What now?

Give it several hours to recover with the doors closed. If it still isn't at 40 °F, check our refrigerator-not-cooling guide and request a diagnosis.
