How to prepare for an appliance repair visit

Updated · Sources listed at the end

Short answer

To prepare for an appliance repair visit, have the model and serial number, a clear description of the problem, clear access to the appliance, and any building permissions you need. The more precisely the technician knows the model and symptom, the more likely they arrive with the right part.

Wrenches and sockets in a technician's tool case

Find the model and serial number

ApplianceWhere the label usually is
RefrigeratorInside the fresh-food section, on a side wall or ceiling
WasherInside the door or lid, or on the back
DryerInside the door frame
DishwasherOn the edge of the door or the tub
Range / ovenBehind the storage drawer or on the oven frame

Before the visit

  • Photo of the model label
  • Error codes and when the problem started
  • Clear a path and the area around the appliance
  • Empty a non-working washer or dishwasher if you can do so safely

Renters, condos, and managed buildings

  • Check whether your lease makes the landlord responsible for appliance repairs
  • Reserve elevators, loading docks, or parking if your building requires it
  • Ask your HOA or manager about rules for contractors
  • Share gate or access codes in your request notes

Describe the problem precisely

"It's broken" leads to a diagnostic-only first visit. "Freezer at 5 °F, fresh-food side at 50 °F, fan silent when I press the door switch, started Tuesday" lets the provider guess the likely part and may let them bring it. Our problem guides list what's useful to note for each symptom.

On the day

  • Keep children and pets away from the work area
  • Have the manual or warranty papers handy if you have them
  • Ask the technician to show you the failed part and explain the cause
  • Get the quote in writing before approving work

Ask the provider

  • Diagnostic fee, and whether it's credited
  • Warranty on parts and labor
  • Whether parts are likely to need ordering
  • Licensing or registration where your state or city requires it
