Get safe first
Urgent appliance safety steps
Safety comes before diagnosis or repair. If any of these apply, do this first — then call for a repair.
You smell gas
- Don't use light switches, phones, or flames inside.
- Leave the home with everyone.
- Call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
- Don't return until you're told it's safe.
Smoke, burning smell, or sparking
- Stop the appliance.
- Switch off the breaker or unplug it only if you can do so safely.
- If there's fire, leave and call 911.
- Don't use it again until a technician has inspected it.
Water leaking
- If water is near an outlet or cord, switch off the breaker first.
- Close the appliance's water supply valve.
- Dry the floor to prevent slips and damage.
Appliance was flooded
- Don't plug in or switch on anything that sat in floodwater.
- Gas appliances need inspection before relighting.
- Have each appliance inspected before use.
Microwave sparking or damaged door
- Stop using it.
- Never open the cabinet — internal parts can hold a dangerous charge after unplugging.
Range tipping or unstable
- Keep weight off the open oven door.
- Confirm an anti-tip bracket is installed and engaged.
