The garage problem, both seasons
| Season | What happens | Sign | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Summer | Hot garage makes the compressor run nonstop | Warm fridge, hot sides, high bills | Clean condenser coils; give it airflow |
| Winter | Cold garage stops the compressor cycling | Freezer thaws | Check rated range; move it or use a garage-rated model |
After an ice-storm outage
- Keep doors closed until power returns.
- Check thermometers: 40 °F or below in the fridge, ice crystals in the freezer.
- Look under the fridge and washer for leaks from frozen lines.
- If temperatures haven't recovered after 24 hours, request a diagnosis.

Generators
Safety
Run generators outdoors, well away from windows and doors. Never in a garage, even with the door open. Smell gas? Leave and call 911 or ONG from outside.
Repair cost vs replacing a garage unit
If a garage refrigerator fails in a season it was never rated for, a repair may not stop the problem coming back. A technician can tell you whether the fault is a part or the environment.
Ice storms and water lines
Ice storms often bring several days without power and with the house cooling down. Refrigerator water lines, ice maker fill tubes and washer hoses on exterior walls are the parts most likely to freeze and split. When the power returns, check behind and under each appliance before turning the water back on, and watch the connections for a few minutes.
Frozen ice maker fill tubes usually thaw on their own once the kitchen warms; a cracked inlet valve does not, and it will leak whenever the ice maker calls for water. A small puddle under the front of the refrigerator after an ice storm is worth reporting to a technician rather than mopping up and ignoring.
Tornado season brings a different risk: short outages followed by surges. If a refrigerator or range is dead after the power returns, check the breaker first, then mention the storm when you request service.

Can I keep food in the cold garage during a winter outage?
Only if you can keep it at 40 °F or below without freezing what shouldn't freeze. Use a thermometer — garage temperatures swing during the day.
