Problem guide

Why is my washer shaking so much?

Updated · Sources listed at the end

Short answer

When a washer shakes or walks during spin, most of the time it's an unbalanced load or a washer that isn't level. On a newly installed machine, check that the shipping bolts were removed. If balanced loads on a level machine still shake, worn suspension springs, shock absorbers, or dampers are likely. A roaring noise during spin points to drum bearings.

Check in this order

  1. Shipping bolts removed (new installs)
  2. Load evenly distributed
  3. All four feet firmly on the floor and lock nuts tightened
  4. Floor solid — springy wood floors amplify vibration

A washer refuses to spin if any earlier link fails: an unconfirmed door lock, water left in the tub, or a load the balance sensor rejects. Those three are where homeowner checks pay off; the motor, belt, coupler, and control are technician diagnosis.

Needs a technician

  • Suspension springs, shock absorbers, or dampers
  • Drum bearings (roaring during spin)
  • Stacked units that move — check the stacking kit

Stop the cycle if

Safety

  • The washer is walking toward a wall, hose, or cord
  • You hear metal-on-metal banging

Cost and repair-or-replace

Dampers, shock absorbers, and suspension rods are moderate repairs and usually worth doing. Bearings on many front-loaders require separating the tub, which can approach the cost of a new machine — that's when replacement deserves a look, especially if the machine is older or has other faults.

What wears out

PartWhat it doesSign of wear
Shock absorbers / dampersDampen drum movement (front-load)Drum bounces freely when pushed down
Suspension springs or rodsHold the tub level (top-load)Tub sits lower on one side
Drum bearingsLet the drum spin smoothlyRoaring or rumbling that gets louder with spin speed

How it's diagnosed

With the washer empty, a technician checks how the tub moves by hand, inspects the dampers or suspension rods, and listens to the bearings at speed. Leveling and load issues are ruled out first, so mention whether you've already checked them.

What to request

A symptom points to likely causes; only testing confirms one. If the checks above don't solve it, request a diagnosis for washer repair and mention what you've already checked.

Common questions

Are washer bearings worth replacing?

Sometimes. On many front-loaders the tub must be disassembled, which makes it a large job. Compare the quote with a new machine.

Should I put my washer on an anti-vibration mat?

Mats can reduce noise and help on hard floors, but they don't fix an unbalanced load, unlevel feet, or worn dampers. Fix those first.
