Short answer
Most dryer problems — belts, rollers, idler pulleys, heating elements, igniters, thermostats, and thermal fuses — are routine repairs worth doing. Replacement makes more sense when the motor or control board fails on an older dryer, or when you want a different fuel type or features. If the complaint is slow drying, check the vent before deciding anything: a new dryer on a blocked vent dries just as slowly.

Start with the vent
Restricted airflow is the most common reason a dryer seems to be failing. It also overheats the dryer and blows thermal fuses. Clean the lint screen, check the outside vent for strong airflow, and look for a crushed transition duct. Long or complex vent runs may need professional cleaning. Lint buildup is a leading factor in dryer fires, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

Common failures and the usual call
| Failure | Usual call |
|---|---|
| Thermal fuse | Repair — and fix the airflow that caused it |
| Heating element or thermostats (electric) | Repair |
| Igniter, flame sensor, or valve coils (gas) | Repair, by a technician |
| Belt, rollers, idler pulley | Repair |
| Door switch or start switch | Repair |
| Drive motor | Compare on older dryers |
| Control board | Compare; check availability |
When replacement is the better call
- The motor or main control has failed and the dryer is older or worn elsewhere
- The drum is damaged or rusted
- You're changing fuel type or need a different size, stacking kit, or ventless design
- Repairs keep recurring even with a clean vent
Gas or electric
If you're replacing, match the dryer to the connections you have. Switching between gas and electric means changing the gas line or the 240-volt circuit, which is a separate project for a qualified installer.
Common questions
My dryer takes two cycles. Should I replace it?
Not before checking airflow. A clogged lint screen, duct, or vent hood is the most common cause, and cleaning it is far cheaper than a new dryer.
Is a squealing dryer worth fixing?
Usually. Squeals and thumps typically come from rollers, belts, or idler pulleys, which are inexpensive wear parts.
