Repair guide

Should you repair or replace your oven or range?

Updated · Sources listed at the end

Short answer

Most oven and range repairs are routine: bake and broil elements, igniters, temperature sensors, burner switches, and spark modules are designed to be replaced. Replacement becomes the better option when a control board is discontinued, a glass cooktop is cracked on an older range, the oven cavity or door is damaged, or you want to change fuel type. Wall ovens lean toward repair because a new one must fit the existing cutout.

Wall ovens and built-ins

A wall oven is sized to its cabinet cutout. If a replacement with the same dimensions isn't available, replacing it can mean cabinet work as well — which often makes repair the practical choice.

Changing fuel type

Switching from electric to gas or the reverse requires a gas line or a 240-volt circuit. That's a separate project for a licensed installer and can change the cost comparison significantly.

Safety comes first

Safety

  • If you smell gas, leave and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
  • Confirm an anti-tip bracket is installed on any freestanding range, old or new.

Before you decide, check

  • Whether the problem is calibration rather than a failed part (measure with an oven thermometer)
  • Part availability for your exact model number
  • Installation costs for a replacement, including any cabinet or connection changes

Common questions

My oven's control board failed. Is it worth fixing?

If the board is available and the oven is otherwise in good condition, often yes. If the board is discontinued, replacement may be the only option.

Is uneven baking a reason to replace an oven?

Rarely. Calibration, a sensor, or a single element usually explains it. Measure with an oven thermometer before deciding.
