Steps that help
- Look up your hardness in the utility's water quality report.
- Set the dishwasher's hardness level per the manual.
- Keep rinse aid filled.
- Clean the filter and spray arms monthly.
Descaling and cleaning
- Use a dishwasher cleaner your manual approves, on the schedule it recommends.
- Soak crusted spray arms (removed per the manual) in white vinegar to loosen scale from the holes.
- Check that rinse aid is filling — some dishwashers have an indicator.
When scale becomes a repair
Heavy scale can eventually restrict the inlet valve screen or coat the heating element, which shows up as low fill or wet, cool dishes. Those parts can be cleaned or replaced by a technician; mention your water hardness when you request service.

Common questions
Will a water softener fix my dishwasher?
Softened water reduces scale buildup, but it won't repair a valve, pump, or heater that's already failed.
