Problem guide

Dishwasher leaking onto the floor

Updated · Sources listed at the end

Short answer

Stop the cycle and dry the floor quickly — water under a dishwasher can damage cabinets and subfloors. Leaks at the door usually come from a dirty or torn gasket, suds from the wrong detergent, or a unit that isn't level. Leaks from underneath usually involve a pump seal, hose, or the inlet valve.

Immediately

Act now

  1. Stop the cycle.
  2. Turn off the dishwasher's supply valve under the sink if water keeps coming.
  3. Dry the floor and the toe-kick area.

How it's diagnosed

The technician removes the toe kick, runs a short cycle, and watches the pump, hoses, and inlet valve connection with a flashlight. Door leaks are checked by inspecting the gasket and door alignment and confirming the right detergent is being used.

Cost and repair-or-replace

Gaskets and hoses are inexpensive. Pump seals and inlet valves are moderate repairs. A leak from a cracked tub generally means replacement. Check under the dishwasher for floor damage either way — it can cost more than the repair.

What to request

A symptom points to likely causes; only testing confirms one. If the checks above don't solve it, request a diagnosis for dishwasher repair and mention what you've already checked.

Common questions

Can dish soap make my dishwasher leak?

Yes. Hand dish soap creates heavy suds that can push past the door seal.

Is it safe to keep using a leaking dishwasher?

Not until you know where the water is going. Even small leaks under the tub can damage flooring and cabinets over time. Stop using it, dry the area, and have the source found.
