This page covers what's specific to Houston. For the full checklist — causes, safe checks, and repair or replace — see freezer repair.
Houston at a glance
- Main appliance stress
- Long humid summers; storms and flooding
- Hurricane season
- June 1 – November 30 (NOAA)
- Natural gas
- CenterPoint Energy across much of the area
Garage freezers
- Check the manual's ambient temperature range
- Keep vents and the condenser area clear
- Use an appliance thermometer to confirm 0 °F
During and after an outage
- Keep the lid or door closed.
- Fill empty space with containers of ice to help hold temperature.
- When power returns, check temperature with a thermometer.
- Follow FoodSafety.gov's chart for anything that thawed.
When to request repair
If the freezer won't reach 0 °F within a day after power returns, or runs constantly, request a diagnosis. See why a freezer stops freezing.
What a technician checks on a freezer that won't recover
- Whether the compressor and condenser fan start after the outage
- Start relay and overload — common weak points exposed by repeated restarts
- Frost pattern on the evaporator (defrost problem vs low refrigerant)
- Door or lid gasket seal, which humidity and heavy use wear down
Stock it before a storm
- Freeze containers of water to fill empty space and keep temperatures stable.
- Group items together so cold is retained longer.
- Keep an appliance thermometer inside, so you know the temperature when power returns.
- Put frequently used items in a cooler to avoid opening the freezer.
Generators
Safety
If you power a freezer from a portable generator, keep the generator outdoors and away from doors and windows, and use a properly rated extension cord.
How a repair request works
- 1Call usTell us the appliance, the brand and what it's doing.

- 3Provider reviews itThey contact you to accept and to ask anything they need.
- 4Diagnosis and quoteThe provider confirms any diagnostic fee and the repair price before work starts.
Common questions
Can I refreeze food after an outage?
Food that still contains ice crystals or is at 40 °F or below can generally be refrozen, per FoodSafety.gov.
My garage freezer hums but feels warm in August. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. Check whether the garage is hotter than the freezer's rated range and whether the condenser area is clear. If it can't hold 0 °F once those are addressed, request a diagnosis.
