Problem guide

Why is frost building up in my freezer?

Updated · Sources listed at the end

Short answer

Frost forms when moist air meets cold surfaces. Frost near the door or on packages points to warm air getting in — a worn gasket or a door that isn't closing. Even frost across the back panel of a frost-free freezer points to a defrost-system fault.

Freezer frost buildup: causes and safe checks

Safe checks

  • Paper test on the gasket
  • Make sure nothing stops the door from closing
  • Clean the gasket with warm soapy water

Why frost matters

Frost insulates the evaporator coil. As it thickens, the freezer cools less efficiently, runs longer, and eventually can't hold 0 °F. In a refrigerator-freezer, frost on the coil also blocks the air that cools the fresh-food section, which is why a defrost failure often shows up first as a warm refrigerator.

  5. 5Drain panUnder the front grille; should be dry or dampYou can check
Every few hours the defrost heater melts frost off the evaporator coil and the water drains to a pan under the cabinet, where condenser heat evaporates it. If any stage fails, frost builds until it blocks the airflow — the fresh-food side warms first — or meltwater refreezes in the drain and overflows under the crisper drawers.

Manual defrost, done safely

  1. Move food to a cooler or another freezer.
  2. Unplug the freezer and leave the door or lid open.
  3. Put towels down and use the drain plug if your chest freezer has one.
  4. Let the frost melt on its own or use a bowl of warm water inside — no heat guns, hair dryers, or sharp tools.
  5. Dry the interior, plug it back in, and wait until it reaches 0 °F before reloading.

Cost outlook

Gasket replacement is usually the least expensive fix. Defrost heaters, thermostats, and sensors are moderate repairs; a defrost control board varies by model.

What to request

A symptom points to likely causes; only testing confirms one. If the checks above don't solve it, request a diagnosis for freezer repair and mention what you've already checked.

Common questions

Should I just defrost it manually?

In a frost-free freezer, manual defrosting only buys time. If the defrost system has failed, frost will return within days.
